New service will deliver Willie C’s, Red Bean’s dishes to Wichita offices, homes

Bill Rowe has been pretty busy since he moved the headquarters of his Blue Moon Caterers from its former home on West Central to a 14,000-square-foot space at 524 S. Seneca earlier this year.

Not only is he planning to open Eat at Wichita Art Museum, which we reported on last week, but he’s also developed a new concept that will allow companies and individuals to get food delivered right to them — including onetime favorites from Red Bean’s Bayou Grill and Willie C’s.

Blue Moon Go, which Rowe quietly launched in August, has its own menu of sandwiches, salads and soups plus group meals designed for small business meetings, he said. It also offers entrées like roast chicken and potatoes with green beans.

Not only that, the menu includes a few former customer favorites from two famous but now-closed restaurants that Rowe formerly owned: Red Beans, which has been closed since 2014, and Willie C’s, whose last Wichita location Rowe closed 17 years ago.

Though Blue Moon Go was designed to serve small groups, Rowe said that individuals craving any of the menu’s offerings can order to their homes. They’ll just have to pay the delivery fee and order a day in advance. A few already have, he said.

But the focus of Blue Moon Go is the small business that needs a small catering. They can order sandwiches, soups or salads a la carte or can get group meals, like a taco bar designed for 12 people. They just have to order by 2 p.m. the day before. (Those who would rather pick up their orders also have that option: The new Blue Moon headquarters has a pick-up door, Rowe said.)

“There’s about 20,000 businesses in Wichita, a little more than that,” Rowe said. “On any given day, there’s probably at least 100 of them having some kind of meeting, like a training seminar or a sales meeting or a board meeting, and they’re bringing in lunch. Blue Moon gets some of that work now, but . . . I think that our regular service model isn’t appropriate because people want to get it ordered in two minutes and hang up and move on to their next priority.”

Blue Moon Go offers service from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Rowe said he’s proud of its easy-to-use new website, which makes placing an order super simple.

Everything is made fresh the morning of the delivery, he said.

“We’ve engineered the products to be cut above most of what they can get elsewhere, so the quality is really strong,” Rowe said.

The Red Bean’s dishes included on the Blue Moon Go menu are jambalaya, dirty pepper jack chicken, and firecracker pasta. The Willie C’s dishes available are Mama’s Meatloaf, stacked beef or chicken enchiladas, and chicken fried steak.

For the past several years, Rowe has been putting on occasional Red Bean’s and Willie C’s memorial dinners, where he serves nostalgic diners buffets of those two restaurants’ most popular dishes.

He plans to continue doing those dinners, he said, but they may need to find a home rather than 8406 W. Central. Rowe’s lease on that space ended in February.

He has another location in mind for his Red Bean’s Fat Tuesday buffet this coming February. But Rowe’s former landlord said that if the West Central space isn’t leased by then, Rowe could still use it. He was able to stage August’s Willie C’s revival there.

Eat at Wichita Art museum should be open sometime in November. I’ll share menu details soon.
