Construction of Wichita’s first Raising Cane’s chicken finger restaurant has been moving swiftly along, and on Tuesday morning, the company sent out a news release saying it had chosen an opening date: June 24. The popular restaurant, which specializes in chicken fingers and dipping sauces, is in a new building on the site where Pizza Hut Italian Bistro once operated. The old building was torn down to make way for Cane’s.

The restaurant plans to hire more than 125 people locally and is inviting people to apply for a long list of jobs, including cashiers and fry cooks. People can apply in person from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 26-June 15 at the Raising Cane’s hiring center in the SpringHill Suites Wichita Airport hotel, 6633 W Kellogg. A full list of available jobs is posted at jobs.raisingcanes.com

Chris Tincher is at the finish line for his new Cajun restaurant, which has taken over the old Hurricane Sports Grill spot at the Tyler Pointe Development, 13th and Tyler. He’ll open the restaurant to the public for the first time on Wednesday, May 28, when he’ll serve dinner from 3 to 10 p.m. Then, starting on Thursday, May 29, he’ll start the restaurant’s regular hours, which will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays for brunch.

Tincher previously owned Todd Brian’s Brick Street Café & Tavern in Old Town Square, but last fall, he announced plans to reinvent his 12-year-old Cajun-inspired restaurant on the west side. He’s completely redone the old Hurricane Sports Grill space, giving it an upscale feel and a menu featuring things like fresh oysters, crawfish, peel-and-eat shrimp, steaks, sea bass, shrimp and grits, meatloaf, fried catfish, crab cakes, crawfish etouffee, and creamy shrimp pasta.

Tincher also owns Bite Me BBQ at 132 N. St. Francis.

Owner Greg Hiser is inching ever closer on an opening date for this uber-upscale restaurant, which he’s been working on for at least two years, and now he says it should be open by early July in a plush new building at 29th and Tyler.

How plush is it? The restaurant will feature a menu of prime steaks, private wine lockers, a central wine room, a grand piano — even golden toilets in the restrooms.

Hiser said it’s taken so long to get the restaurant open because he keeps finding things he wants to add and change. But he has hired a chef — Jorge Morales, who previously worked at places like Itzcali and Sheet’s Creek — and the menu is almost complete.

When the owners of this Kansas City-based breakfast chain first announced plans in October to expand into Wichita with three to five restaurants, they said the first should open in the old Las Catrinas space near 21st and Maize by spring.

Since then, nothing much has happened.

But the restaurant’s vice president of operations, Scott Jayne, just provided an update, saying that the company recently received its building permits and that demolition will start in the next couple of weeks. The restaurant is now on track for a fall opening, he said.

The Big Biscuit serves a big menu of breakfast dishes including biscuits and gravy, omelets, pancakes, benedicts, waffles, french toast and breakfast sandwiches. It also serves lunch items like salads, burgers, sandwiches and fried chicken strips.
