Monday night’s storm downed trees and took out power all over Wichita.

It also knocked a giant old tree onto the roof of Los Pinos, a Mexican restaurant (named after a type of tree — the pine) that has operated at 1225 W. Douglas since 2014.

Contacted on Tuesday morning, owner Gustavo Hernandez said he was still trying to figure out how to get the tree off of his building. The wind knocked it over at the base and it landed on the edge of the west roof.

He’d spent the morning on the phone with his insurance company and was trying to find out whose responsibility it was to remove the tree, which is now hovering over the sidewalk and is surrounded by yellow caution tape.

But the tree didn’t do any damage inside, Hernandez said, adding that he was planning to open for business as usual.

“Inside everything looks good,” he said. “It’s only on the roof. They’ve got electricity. They’ve got phones working.”
