West-siders will need to drive a little farther north to visit Panera Bread starting next month.

As had been rumored, the company is moving its restaurant in NewMarket Square, 2441 N. Maize Road, to the former Torchy’s Tacos space less than a mile away at 2901 N. Maize Road.

The restaurant will reopen in its new home on Wednesday, Oct. 23. The new, free-standing space will allow the restaurant to add a drive-through window, something that wasn’t possible in the strip center at NewMarket Square, where Panera has operated since 2001.

The new spot will have 3,950 square feet and a “fresh and improved look, with a more modern, compact design,” according to a news release.

To celebrate the grand opening, the relocated Panera will give free bagels for a year to the first 50 people in line when the dining room opens at 6 a.m. on Oct. 23. The winners will each get a redeemable punch card good for one free bagel a week for a year.

The new Panera’s hours will be 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. The drive through will be open an extra 30 minutes after the dining room closes each night.

A Panera spokeswoman said that the NewMarket location will remain open until the day before the move — Oct. 22.

Wichita’s Panera is owned by Flynn Group, the second largest Panera franchisee in the country.

Torchy’s closed both of its Wichita restaurants in 2022.
