Newton residents lament town’s latest restaurant closing — this one after only 8 months
It’s a big deal when a small town gets a nice restaurant.
It’s an even bigger deal when that restaurant closes.
On Tuesday, Newton’s Cadillac Jack’s Steak House — which had just opened in mid-December — announced on social media that it had closed its doors.
“After difficult conversations Cadillac Jacks has decided to shut the doors,” a post on Facebook read. “There just isn’t the support we had hoped for to support a small business.”
The restaurant, the latest to operate in the historic Old Mill at 301 N. Main. It served steaks, burgers and sandwiches and also had a lunch menu.
In the comments section of the post about the closing, customers expressed shock, and several people lamented that Newton could not support a nice restaurant.
“We’re sorry to hear this but Newton has never been good at supporting locals even though they complain a lot about not having many local businesses,” one person wrote. “Thanks for your efforts in trying to provide a nice place to eat in our town.”
“I was afraid this would happen,” wrote another. “Newton just does not support this.”
Others blamed the economy.
“Blaming community support in this economy is a wild flex,” one person wrote.
“I wish our economy would be better so we could have supported you more,” wrote another. “We had excellent food and excellent service when we were there!”
Several Facebook posters also wondered what to do with unused gift cards to the restaurant. I’ve reached out to Cadillac Jack’s with that question and will update this post if I hear back.
The Old Mill building has been home to several restaurants over the years, including Reba’s Restaurant, which operated for 11 years before closing in 2016. Before that, Claire Williams’ The Spartan operated in the space.
