Several Wichita restaurants are celebrating birthdays — and surviving COVID — this month
The restaurant landscape has been extra tough since the COVID-19 pandemic, so when a local spot makes it to an anniversary year, there’s cause to celebrate.
Several Wichita restaurants will be celebrating birthday milestones this week and in the coming weeks and will be offering discounts and special events to mark the occasions.
Here’s a list:
Alzavino Wine Tavern, 1001 W. Douglas: It’s been one year since Ken and Danielle Harmon opened their self-service wine bar in Delano, and the couple has learned much during that time, they say. Opening a new business during a pandemic and then dealing with supply chain disruptions, hiring constraints and inflation provided the couple with plenty of challenges, Danielle said, but they’ve also developed strong relationships with customers and want to say thank you.
Starting today and running through Saturday, Alzavino will offer new food specials and 10% off all food. Customers also will get 25% off of ICTMakers and Alzavino merchandise stocked in the store, and those who have the original Alzavino logo WineStation cards will get special daily thank-you gifts or coupons. There will also be gift certificate drawings throughout the week, and on Friday, musician J. Michael will perform from 6 to 9 p.m.
Brazita Bites, 7817 E. 37th St. North: Rodrigo and Jessica Ciriaco opened their food truck that specializes in Brazilian coxinha — fried dough balls stuffed with various fillings — at the height of the pandemic in September 2020. Since then, they’ve grown a following and even expanded, recently adding a brick-and-mortar spot inside the new Glas Haus Racing facility at 7817 E. 37th St. North.
To celebrate two years in business, the Ciriacos will offer deals throughout September, including a box featuring 32 chicken coxinhas for $19.99. People who visit the Brazita Bites Facebook page also can find a link for a $5 off coupon.
Torchy’s Tacos East, 2191 N. Rock Road: Two years have passed since Torchy’s Tacos entered the Wichita market, and the city’s original restaurant will celebrate on Friday, Sept. 16, by offering free queso for a year to the first 50 guests in through the door starting at 10 a.m. The day will also feature all-day happy hour drink specials, live music and raffle drawings from 4 to 8 p.m., and a taco eating contest at 5 p.m. (Aspiring contestants should email chelsea.mcgaha@torchystacos.com)
Doo-Dah Diner, 206 E. Kellogg: This always-packed Wichita diner has been in business for a decade, and owners Patrick and Timirie Shibley — who opened their doors in September 2012 — will celebrate their 10th birthday with an all-you-can-eat Cajun buffet served from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20. It’ll cost $30 for adults, $15 for ages 6-10 and for people 75 and over. Call 316-265-7011 for reservations.
