Dutch Bros. settles on a second Wichita spot, and Starbucks will be its next-door neighbor
People sitting in the drive-through at the Starbucks at West and Kellogg may have noticed recently a newly vacant lot just to the south.
By the end of the year, though, that lot will be filled by a new-to-Wichita Starbucks competitor.
A spokeswoman for Dutch Bros., a popular Oregon-based drive-through coffee chain that announced late last year its plans to enter the Wichita market, said the company has chosen a site for its second local store.
In addition to the under-construction shop just south of the QuikTrip at 29th North and Maize Road, Dutch Bros. also is adding a store at 605 S. West St., which is on the corner near West and Kellogg. The site previously was home to a National Tire & Battery store, but the building was recently demolished.
Dutch Bros. spokeswoman Rilynn Davis said that Dutch Bros. has pulled permits on the lot to start construction, and although it’s still early in the process, they hope to have it open by the end of this year. The Maize Road Dutch Bros. is on track to open sometime this summer, she said, and she should have a more firm date sometime in June.
The company is also looking for spots in Derby and in Lenexa but so far hasn’t signed leases yet, she said. Derby’s planning commission last week, though, approved plans for the company to build a store near Cambridge Street and Rock Road.
The plans approved for Dutch Bros Coffee would establish a location in Lot 2, Block A of The Oaks 5th Addition, north of the Cambridge/Rock intersection on the west side of Rock Road.
Dutch Bros. is a drive-through only store that serves coffee drinks, smoothies, tea, lemonade and sweets like muffin tops and granola bars. The company has about 500 stores in 12 states, and the chain is known for hiring staff members who are extra friendly and positive.
