A classic Wichita burger restaurant is preparing to make its third move in 69 years
One of Wichita’s oldest restaurants is about to make a move, and this is your last week to visit it in the space it’s occupied for the last 31 years.
Calvin’s Hamburger Haven, a Wichita staple since it first opened in May 1952, is moving to the former NuWay spot at 2417 S. Seneca, which has been vacant since NuWay closed there last Christmas Eve. That’s less than a mile south of its current spot at 1929 S. Seneca.
Calvin’s, which serves burgers, chicken strips, hot links and more, posted a sign earlier this year informing customers of the planned move, but now, it’s almost here. The owner will close in the current space, where the restaurant has operated since 1990, on Sunday and plans to reopen in the new space on Jan. 3.
The old NuWay building has a drive-through, which Calvin’s will use as a pick-up window where people who ordered ahead can get their food without getting out of the car. It also has more space, which is something the owner was looking for.
Calvin’s Hamburger Haven first opened in May 1952 in a small building at 1526 S. Seneca. It was a popular place for 1950s teens to hang out. But in 1990, it was forced to move to make way for a new QuikTrip.
Calvin’s is now owned by Jose Barba.
