New speakeasy featuring dinner, drinks and dancers is planned for West Kellogg in Wichita
There’s a new business coming to the former Carrie B’s and Oh My Sushi spot at 6339 W. Kellogg.
Austin Henry, who oversees several nightclubs in Wichita, is venturing out on his own to open The Shadows, which he describes as an upscale speakeasy that will include craft cocktails, dinner and — later in the evenings — burlesque-style dancers performing onstage.
He hopes to have it open sometime in late December or early January.
Henry, who has already put the signs on the buildings, said he’s hoping to appeal both to couples looking for a unique date night and to business travelers staying at nearby hotels on West Kellogg.
He said he’s completely remodeling the interior of the small building and has added a stage and a DJ booth and plans an art deco interior with dim lighting. When people walk in the front doors, they’ll find themselves in an 8x8 foot vestibule, and they’ll have to push on the bookshelf to enter the bar — just like a speakeasy from prohibition days might have had.
“It’s going to be a true speakeasy,” he said.
Though he’s calling the business The Shadows, it’s not related to The Shadow, which operated at 550 N. Rock Road from 2003 until 2010. The two businesses will have a similar vibe, though, Henry said.
The food menu will likely feature items like burgers and a steak dinner, and there will also be a menu of craft cocktails.
One interesting detail, Henry said, is that he hired as his consultant on the business Izzy Kharasach, who works with “Bar Rescue” star Jon Taffer and frequently appears on the show.
Henry said he’d share more details as opening day draws near.
