A new restaurant that will welcome the cosplay community has quietly popped up in Wichita

A new sushi restaurant has popped up in an old Wichita restaurant and bar spot on the west side.

Oh My Sushi quietly opened earlier this week in the little building behind the La Quinta Inn on West Kellogg that previously held Bogey’s Sports Bar and Carrie B’s before that. The address is 6339 W. Kellogg.

The owner is Mayumi Takaki, a California transplant who decided to open a sushi restaurant more than a year ago. She leased the building in 2019 but needed a while to wade through all the licensing requirements. The restaurant was ready to go in February, but then COVID-19 hit.

Now, she feels comfortable enough to open, but for now, she’s offering takeout only. Starting on Monday, the restaurant will also offer delivery through DoorDash.

The menu, which you can see below, offers a small selection of nigiri sushi rolls, side dishes like shrimp tempura and edamame, and several bento boxes with proteins like teriyaki chicken and beef katsu. The menu will be expanded in the coming months.

Eventually, Takaki plans to open the dining room, which will be full service and offer a full bar.

Opening day was Tuesday, and through Sept. 16, the restaurant will be offering 50 percent off any one item as a grand opening special.

Oh My Sushi’s playful name was inspired by the Japanese comic series “Oh My Goddess!” which is popular in anime culture, said the restaurant’s general manager Jason Inouyi. Takaki’s daughter is into anime, and once the restaurant opens for dine-in, it will have anime nights when those into cosplay will be invited to dine while dressed as their favorite characters.
