New Riverside doughnut shop has just opened with an unexpected dish on the menu
The new doughnut shop that has taken over the old Jack’s North Hi Carryout spot in Wichita opened over the weekend, and its menu includes an unexpected food item.
It’s not burgers.
The shop, which opened for business on Sunday right across the street from North High School, is offering ramen in addition to its menu of doughnuts, kolaches, sausage rolls and croissant sandwiches. The new name is Jack’s North Hi Donuts.
The co-owners of the shop at 603 W. 13th St. are Alex Hong and his brother, John, who both live in the Dallas area. They took over the longtime Jack’s North Hi space at 603 W. 13th, which first opened as a burger stand in 1951, back in the spring. They’ve been working on the space ever since and even gave the classic retro sign out front a makeover that didn’t sit well with some neighbors.
I stopped in this morning, and the doughnut case was filled with a large variety of cake and raised doughnuts, including cinnamon rolls, eclairs and apple fritters. There were also several savory options, including kolaches with smoked sausage and a ham-and-cheese croissant. The shop also serves coffee.
I purchased a sausage and cheese breakfast sandwich, and the nice woman working behind the counter threw in a glazed doughnut for free. I’ll be interested to stop back in over lunch one day and try the ramen.
The new shop is open daily from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are a couple of tables inside and a few stools along the counter that faces 13th Street.
