An update on opening day for Wichita’s Torchy’s Tacos, whose sign is now up on Rock Road
The building at 21st and Rock sat there for months after Torchy’s Tacos signed a lease on it last year, signaling that the Austin-based taco chain was headed to town.
Then suddenly over the last several weeks, there’s been a flurry of remodeling activity, and the sign suddenly appeared on the building at 2191 N. Rock Road, stirring much excitement from passers by.
Now, we have a few more details about when the chain will be opening the restaurant.
A spokesperson for Torchy’s said this week that the restaurant is “on track to open September.” But they’re reluctant to commit to a date because of COVID-19.
“We continue to follow the current CDC recommendations and government restrictions for restaurants related to COVID-19, which will set our final timeline accordingly,” she said.
The restaurant is now in the process of hiring its staff, and those looking for a job may stop by the hiring trailer in the restaurant’s parking lot from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Applicants can get more information about the roughly 100 jobs available, which range from cashiers to cooks to dishwashers, at https://torchystacos.com/job-listings.
Torchy’s operates more than 75 restaurants in states including Texas, Louisiana, Colorado, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. Its Wichita restaurant and one they have planned for Lawrence will mark the company’s entry into Kansas.
The menu includes the restaurant’s signature “damn good tacos” made with fillings like fried shrimp, fried chicken, pork carnitas fried avocado, smoked brisket and more. There’s also queso, breakfast tacos, bowls, margaritas and beer on the menu.
Torchy’s will have a full bar and an outdoor patio.
Stay tuned for the exact Torchy’s opening date.
