Bob Marley would have been 75 this week, and Wichita is throwing some birthday parties
If reggae legend Bob Marley were still alive, he would turn 75 on Thursday.
And although the famous Jamaican singer and songwriter has been dead for 39 years, a couple of Wichita businesses still consider him worth celebrating and will do so this weekend.
On Friday, Central Standard Brewing — the popular craft brewery at 156 S. Greenwood, will put on a Bob Marley party that will last from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. and feature music from Wichita-based reggae band Lively Up. Admission to the show will be free.
Then, on Saturday, a Bob Marley Birthday Party is planned at Wichita restaurant Sorrel’s Jamaican Food, which moved late last year to a big new spot at 222 S. Commerce, near the northeast corner of Intrust Bank Arena.
It will last from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. and will feature food specials, including $8 Rasta Pasta and $6 jerk chicken, as well as Jamaica-friendly drink specials like Red Stripe drafts for $2 and rum punch for $5.
They’ll also have a Bob Marley birthday cake, and Lively Up will perform from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. There will be a $5 cover charge at the door after 9 p.m.
Marley is best known for songs like “I Shot the Sheriff,” “Stir It Up” and “No Woman No Cry.”
