Two Wichita restaurants appearing on one national TV show, throwing a joint watch party

It was all the way back in June when a national television show came to Wichita to film segments at two Wichita restaurants — Doo-Dah Diner and Public at the Brickyard.

Now, the restaurants are finally allowed to share what the show was and what network it will appear on. Both Wichita restaurants are appearing on separate episodes of Burgers, Brew & ‘Que, a show that appears on Cooking Channel and is hosted by celebrity chef Michael Symon.

Public’s episode has already aired, and the Doo-Dah Diner episode aired on Tuesday.

Because Wichita might have missed the shows — Public didn’t find out their episode had aired until after the fact and Cooking Channel is part of a higher-tier channel package not everyone gets — the two restaurants are teaming up to put on a watch party, where they’ll show both episodes. (Cooking Channel is on Channel 240 on Cox.)

The watch party will be at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, at Public, 129 N. Rock Island, and the owners will be serving a taco bar featuring their Papa Bear’s Brisket Tacos, which were featured on the segment. The taco buffet will be $14 a person.

The show is hosted by Symon, a celebrity chef, restaurant owner and a regular on Food Network, which owns Cooking Channel. The Public episode was the first one of the show’s sixth season. Symon himself did not visit Wichita for the filming.

The Doo-Dah Diner episode is all about burgers and was filmed before they’d returned to their remodeled downtown restaurant at 206 E. Kellogg. I was actually present in June when filming of the episode was happening at the temporary location at Harry and Webb, since closed, and I watched the Shibleys shoot and re-shoot scenes and stand for lengthy on-camera interviews.

Public is normally closed on Mondays so it’s opening exclusively for the watch party that day.
