Ramen restaurant set up like a Japanese pub will open on Wichita’s east side this weekend
Jack Fukuda has chosen an opening date for his second Wichita restaurant — Yokohama Ramen Izakaya at 6434 E. Central. And it’s just a few days away.
The new restaurant, which is an upscale and enhanced version of the Yokohama Ramen Joint restaurant Fukuda opened back in 2016 at 613 W. Douglas, will open at 11 a.m. on Saturday. After that, its hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day of the week except Wednesdays, when it will be closed.
Fukuda has also updated his original restaurant’s hours in Delano to be the same as at the new restaurant.
Customers will find many differences between Yokohama Ramen Joint and the new Yokohama Ramen Izakaya. The latter is much larger — at 50 seats rather than 30 — and is also decorated with dark wood tones, even on the walls.
An “izakaya” is an informal Japanese pub that serves drinks and appetizers.
It will serve alcohol and a menu that features not only ramen soup but also a big selection of nearly 50 different “small plates,” meant to be shared. Choices will include things like calamari tempura, fried oysters, grilled squid, salmon carpaccio, spicy chicken gizzards and fried baby octopus. You can see the full menu below.
It’ll also have a bar with sake drinks, beer and Japanese whiskey, and a special bar section has been built in the back of the restaurant. Be sure to look for the unique wall in the bar area that features a cartoon version of Fukuda. He envisions it as a “selfie wall.”
The new place is in Normandie Center, a retro strip center at the corner of Central and Woodlawn, and Fukuda took over and completely remodeled the space that used to be home to Twizted Confections.
