Restaurant and tequila room planned for Wichita is on hold, may end up in different spot

Victoria Tamez still plans to open her Wichita Latin restaurant and tequila bar that she announced back in February.

She’s just no longer sure when — or exactly where.

Tamez signed the lease on a space at 2514 E. Douglas earlier this year, deciding it was the perfect spot for her Azucar Social House. She described the place as an upscale bar and grill with a menu full of Latin and American food as well as a tequila tasting room and a bar that featured seats that would be individual swings suspended from the ceiling.

Originally, she hoped to have it ready to open by May.

But there were unexpected complications, Tamez said. And then, she found out she was expecting a baby. In the end, she decided that it just wasn’t the right time.

“This isn’t an ‘It’s over,’” she said. “We are just looking into perhaps a new location, perhaps smaller, to give Wichita a preview and taste of the menu and food,” She said. “And it may be the same location. But we’re definitely pushing this project into 2020.”

Tamez said that she did a lot of work on the restaurant over the past year, taking a trip to Mexico to taste food and get ideas for recipes and buying all the equipment, glassware, menus and furniture for the restaurant. That’s all going into storage now, she said, and will stay there until she finds just the right spot.

For now, she said, she wants to give herself the rest of the year to experience new motherhood. She plans to return her focus to Azucar in the new year.

“God’s timing is everything to me,” she said. “I’m willing to wait and do it right.”

The spot she originally chose for the restaurant has 3,400 square feet inside and about that same amount of space outside, where Tamez planned a big fenced-in patio.

I’ll let you know what she decides about the future of Azucar.
