Last week, I wrote about an almost-complete building at the corner of 13th and Tyler that has caused much west-side curiosity.
Mystery solved: Soon, it will be a new Fried Pies kiosk in Northwest Centre.
After that story was published, I received e-mails from several readers asking me to identify a few more under-construction buildings, and the one I was most asked about has been taking shape for weeks on South Meridian, right across the street from the South branch YMCA entrance.
That one is about to become Wichita's fifth Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers and the south side's first. Crews broke ground on the building earlier this year, and it should be ready to open in late August.
The exact address is 3450 S. Meridian.
The new Freddy’s will be corporate-owned, and it may feel a little unfamiliar to Wichita Freddy’s fans. Since our last Freddy’s went up at 420 S. Ridge Road in the spring of 2011, the chain has upgraded and changed many parts of its design, from seating to restrooms to floor tiles to wall decor.
The new Freddy’s will have all the latest upgrades, and it will also serve as a prototype to test a new, more efficient cook-line configuration, said Scott Redler, a Freddy's co-founder. It will be 3,060 square feet and will have 108 seats.
I'll keep you updated on an exact opening date.
