Downtown coffee shop open for a year will close later this month
The owner of a downtown coffee shop that has been open for about a year is planning to close it.
Late last week, Cofellow Coffee Parlor owner Jeremy Weldon shared the news on social media that Dec. 27 would be the shop’s last day on the first floor of The National, a luxury apartment and office space in the former Commerce Bank Building at 150 N. Main.
Weldon, whose original Cofellow Coffee opened in Goddard in May 2023, did not return a message about the announcement. But in the Facebook post he shared December 4, he said he wanted to focus more on his original shop and the one he opened in the lobby of Vima Church, 2120 N. Woodlawn, in September.
“When we opened Goddard, we could’ve never imagined — or even dreamed — of having multiple locations,” the post read. “Yet here we are, having opened two locations within nine months this past year. As Cofellow grows, we want to steward our current responsibilities well.”
Describing the news about his 700-square-foot downtown location as “bittersweet,” Weldon said he also wanted to focus more on growing his mobile coffee cart for events and weddings and on roasting coffee for businesses and churches.
I’ve reached out to The Commerce Club, which is the co-working space inside The National, to ask about plans for the space once it’s vacated but haven’t heard back yet.
The first tenant in the small coffee shop space was Valley Center-based coffee chain Buffalo Brew Coffee Company. But it was open there only a few months. The Commerce Club reached out to Weldon about taking the space over after he announced his intentions to expand into Wichita.
Weldon said earlier this year that his friend Jon Morris, the pastor of Vima Church, offered him the opportunity to open inside the church’s lobby. Vima, a nondenominational church that had been temporarily operating at Coleman Environmental Magnet Middle School, took over the former Genesis Health Clubs space in Brittany Center, 2120 N. Woodlawn, in September.
The shop is open to the public, even though it’s in the church building. Its hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays.
