12 things to do in the Wichita area this weekend (July 4-5)
Happy Fourth! Wichita brings back an Independence Day fireworks display for the community this year, along with a very long slippery slide and other activities in the afternoon and evening downtown. The Independence Day Block Party will be from 1 to 10:30 p.m. Here are some of the highlights (see the website wichitaparksfoundation.org for details) along with a few other things to do in the Wichita area this weekend.
Stars and Stripes 5K, including face painting and photos, 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Kids Fun Run about 8:30 a.m., Cessna Stadium at Wichita State University; $15 to $40; starsandstripes5k.com.
Riverside children’s parade, 10 a.m. Saturday, Pagoda building in Central Riverside Park, plus breakfast for sale for $8 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under from 7 to 11 a.m.; free parade registration for children including packet of goodies starting at 8:30 a.m.; 316-262-6165.

Fireworks, 10 p.m. Saturday, to be shot off from along the bike path on the west bank of the river roughly between Douglas and Lewis; viewing areas include the east bank of the river downtown, the Hyatt lawn, and Lawrence-Dumont Stadium; accompanying music at 97.1 BOB FM; free; wichitaparksfoundation.org.
Daylily show, presented by the Prairie Winds Daylily Society, 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Botanica, 701 N. Amidon; free admission to show; admission to Botanica charged if you want to go into the gardens.
