12 things to do in the Wichita area this weekend (July 4-5)

Happy Fourth! Wichita brings back an Independence Day fireworks display for the community this year, along with a very long slippery slide and other activities in the afternoon and evening downtown. The Independence Day Block Party will be from 1 to 10:30 p.m. Here are some of the highlights (see the website wichitaparksfoundation.org for details) along with a few other things to do in the Wichita area this weekend.

Stars and Stripes 5K, including face painting and photos, 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Kids Fun Run about 8:30 a.m., Cessna Stadium at Wichita State University; $15 to $40; starsandstripes5k.com.

Riverside children’s parade, 10 a.m. Saturday, Pagoda building in Central Riverside Park, plus breakfast for sale for $8 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under from 7 to 11 a.m.; free parade registration for children including packet of goodies starting at 8:30 a.m.; 316-262-6165.

“Goose Bumps: The Science of Fear,” traveling exhibition, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Exploration Place, 300 N. McLean Blvd. Included in admission: $9.50 ages 12 to 64, $8 ages 65 and up, $6 ages 3 to 11, free for ages 2 and under; 316-660-0600, exploration.org.

Slide the City, 1,000-foot water slide, 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday (plus 1 to 2 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. for those who have unlimited-slide tickets), $30 to $65, 599 W. Maple/Lewis Street Bridge; www.slidethecity.com/events/wichita.

Family Activity Zone, including bounce houses, games, and a pump track for BMX and skateboard riders plus skateboard demos, food vendors, 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Lawrence-Dumont Stadium; free.

Country singer Jessica Lynn concert (along with beer garden and food for sale all day), 3 p.m. Saturday, Hyatt lawn, 400 W. Waterman; free admission.

US9 Armed Forces vs. Puerto Rico Collegiate Baseball Club baseball game, 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Lawrence-Dumont; $7 general admission at the gate or www.selectaseat.com.

Lucky People concert, along with beer garden and food vendors, 7 p.m. Saturday, special ceremony at 6:30 p.m., Hyatt lawn, 400 W. Waterman; free admission.

Fireworks, 10 p.m. Saturday, to be shot off from along the bike path on the west bank of the river roughly between Douglas and Lewis; viewing areas include the east bank of the river downtown, the Hyatt lawn, and Lawrence-Dumont Stadium; accompanying music at 97.1 BOB FM; free; wichitaparksfoundation.org.

Daylily show, presented by the Prairie Winds Daylily Society, 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Botanica, 701 N. Amidon; free admission to show; admission to Botanica charged if you want to go into the gardens.

“Things My Mother Taught Me,” play about a young couple trying to please their families while setting up their first apartment, 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Kechi Playhouse, 100 E. Kechi Road (61st North and Oliver); $11; 316-744-2152.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s 148th birthday exhibit, photographs of the building of Wichita’s Frank Lloyd Wright house plus artifacts and refreshments, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Wichita Center for the Arts, 9112 E. Central; free; www.fllwallenhouse.org.
