Former KAKE reporter Lily Wu gets an on-air job at a different local station
A popular Wichita television news reporter who has been off the air since December will soon make her return.
Lily Wu, who left KAKE news in December after nine years as a reporter there, has accepted a job at rival station KWCH, Channel 12, she announced via social media on Tuesday evening.
In her new role, she’ll co-anchor the 4 p.m. news Monday through Friday on KWCH’s sister station, KSCW. During the weekday hours, she’ll work as a reporter in the field, and her stories will air on KWCH evening news programs.
From August 2014 to September 2016, Wu anchored KAKE’s morning show and said she loved it. Her new job allows her to return to anchoring and also work as a reporter.
“Now there’s this awesome opportunity where I get to do both of the things I love: anchoring, which is a leadership position, and being out in the field covering the news.”
Wu, who was bound by a six-month non-compete contract with KAKE barring her from accepting jobs with other local stations, will have her first day on air on June 22.
She earned a master’s in journalism from the University of Hong Kong and started with KAKE in 2010. She also earned two bachelor’s degrees from Wichita State University and graduated from East High School’s International Baccalaureate program in 2003.
During her six-month break from television, Wu said, she worked on “self improvement” but found herself missing her on-air work.
“I really thinking that this is the perfect role for me,” she said.
