Side judge roasted Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes over his awful spike after TD run
We’ve all witnessed it :Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is cool under pressure.
Whether it’s rallying the Chiefs from 24 points down in the second quarter of a playoff game or leading a come-from-behind victory in overtime of Super Bowl LVIII, Mahomes is rarely flustered.
But when he gets excited, well, things don’t always go well.
Case in point was Mahomes’ reaction to his 10-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against the Bills. He was keyed up about giving the Chiefs the lead and wanted to spike the football with gusto.
Things didn’t turn out quite as planned.
CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz didn’t miss a beat when he quipped: “And his worst pass of the night is on the spike attempt.”
After the Chiefs’ 32-29 win, Mahomes made a funny apology about the spike on X.
The NFL released mic’d-up video from the AFC Championship Game and it included a bit about the errant spike (and, yeah, “errant spike” isn’t a phrase often written).
Mahomes said in the video: “Worst spike of all-time. But that’s all right, we got it in there. The ball slipped out of my hand.”
Side judge Don Willard roasted Mahomes, telling the Chiefs quarterback:“That might’ve been the worst spike I’ve ever seen.”
Mahomes admitted as much.
“It was,” Mahomes told Willard. “That’s the first thing I said when I came to the sideline.”
Here’s that clip from X user Clay Wendler.
