Wingnuts stumble late, lose to Thunderheads
Amarillo scored three runs in the eighth off Wingnuts releiver Derek Eitel and beat Wichita 3-2 on Friday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The Wingnuts hold a two-game lead over Laredo in the American Association South Division with three games to play. Wichita ends the regular season with three home games against Grand Prairie.
The Wingnuts took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the fourth inning. John Nester led off with a triple, and scored on Leo Vargas’ one-out double. Vargas stole third, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Smart.
Wingnuts starter Jon Link held the Thunderheads to two hits in six innings, and Daniel Bennett pitched a perfect eighth.
Eitel, making his second appearance since joining the Wingnuts this week, began with eighth with two strikeouts sandwiched around a single. Ryan Leveret then doubled to scored Corey Bass, and Stefan Gartrell followed with a home run to put Amarillo on top.
