Wichita State takes advantage of 17 walks in win over Nebraska
Tanner Kirk made a dramatic return to his hometown Friday.
The Wichita State senior drove in a career-high five runs to help the Shockers rout Nebraska 17-5 in Lincoln, Neb.
The victory snapped an eight-game road losing streak for WSU, and it ended Nebraska’s six-game home winning streak.
Nebraska (9-7) jumped to a 3-0 lead after four innings, but WSU erupted for four runs in the fifth to take the lead for good.
The Shockers were helped by Husker wildness. NU hurlers walked 17 Shockers.
In the top of the fifth, WSU (6-11) got three straight walks to load the bases. Kirk then delievered a two-run single. Mikel Mucha’s single scored the tying run, and Ryan Tinkham’s sacrifice fly drove in Kirk with the go-ahead run.
After each team scored in the sixth, WSU put the game out of reach with a five-run seventh. NU pitchers walked five in the inning. The big blow was Kirk’s bases-loaded double, scoring three runs.
Willie Schwanke (3-2) picked up the victory, going six innings, yielding three unearned runs and seven hits. In the fifth, Nebraska loaded the bases but did not score when Dayton Dugas made a sliding catch in right field.
