Stay in front of him

Vanderbilt point guard Wade Baldwin is the key figure in the offense, capable of making three-pointers, drawing fouls and taking the ball to the basket.

Wichita State locked its defense in on Baldwin, determined to keep him from getting a head of steam.

“Coach (Isaac Brown) had the scout and he was telling us that that guy was going to drive and attack every time he got the ball,” WSU center Anton Grady said. “The bigs needed to sprint back and be on alert, when he drives just wall up everytime he goes to the basket.”

Baldwin, a sophomore who is judged a possible NBA Draft pick, finished with nine points on 3-of-9 shooting. He committed four turnovers while handing out five assists. He made three free throws, a total that made WSU coach Gregg Marshall content.

“Baldwin is tremendous when he starts going downhill,” Marshall said. “We were very diligent in not fouling him. Sometimes he gets in there and he just puts up a circus shot because he’s looking for contact.”

WSU’s defense also worked against Vandy guard Matthew Fisher-Davis, who entered the game the SEC’s top three-point shooter at 45.7 percent. He missed all four of his threes and scored two points.

Shot to the eye

Wichita State’s Fred VanVleet missed a few minutes in the first half after taking a cut over his right eye. His biggest fear was sitting out. Close behind was the prospect of stitches and the needle.

“I just hoped I didn’t need stitches because that was going to take more time, and I also hate getting stitches,” he said. “We’ve got the best trainer in the world, Todd Fagan, and he patched me up real quick.”

VanVleet didn’t notice the blood. Grady did.

“It didn’t hurt at all,” VanVleet said. “I didn’t even know it was bleeding until Anton told me. I tried to shut him up so the ref didn’t see it.”

Worth noting

Wichita State’s 20-point margin ties its third-largest in its tournament history. The 2006 Shockers beat Seton Hall by 20.… WSU sold its NCAA allotment of 200 tickets for the First Four. That increases to 450 for the next round.… VanVleet and Ron Baker both played in their 11th NCAA game, tying former teammate Tekele Cotton for most in Shockers history. VanVleet extended his NCAA career lead in assists to 45 with seven. That is tied (with Randy Smithson in 1981 and Malcolm Armstead in 2013) for fourth-most by a Shocker.… Vanderbilt’s 50 points are the third-fewest allowed by WSU in the NCAAs.
