Wichita State basketball player Anton Grady’s movement in his upper body is improving and doctors expect his motor function and strength to return, according to a news release from WSU on Saturday.

“Grady was alert and responsive to questions and had feeling in his extremities on Friday but had limited use of his arms and legs,” the release said. “By Saturday morning the latter condition had improved, especially in his upper body.”

Doctors said Grady suffered a spinal concussion, WSU said in the release.

Grady, a senior from Cleveland, was taken from Friday’s game on a stretcher after collapsing on the court with three minutes remaining in the game. Grady, while turning to run, collided with a Alabama player Dazon Ingram. Grady took a few, stumbling steps before falling to the court. In the news release, WSU describes Grady hitting Ingram with his chin, causing his head to rotate.

A CT scan, to check for broken bones, and an MRI to investigate soft tissue damage, were negative, according to WSU.

Grady will receive physical therapy in Orlando before doctors determine when to release him.

WSU coaches and players visited Grady after Saturday’s practice. Radio broadcaster Mike Kennedy, on Twitter, said he visited Grady and described Grady as able to feel his fingers and toes and lift his arms a little. “Will still be a couple of days before he is moving around much,” Kennedy wrote.
