Wichita mayor hints affiliated baseball announcement coming Dec. 7

Wichita mayor Jeff Longwell promised good news for Wichitans who want a new affiliated baseball team by the end of this year.

That good news might be delivered on Dec. 7, according to Longwell.

In his speech on Tuesday evening at the annual Chamber of Commerce meeting, Longwell began talking to the crowd at Century II about Wichita’s recent attempts of landing an affiliated baseball team for a new downtown stadium development.

“I would highly recommend buying a ticket (to a Dec. 7 Chamber event) for potentially some really big news,” Longwell said.

The City Council last month hired a consulting firm to seek out available franchises to move to Wichita. Plans call for an affiliated team to occupy a new stadium where Lawrence-Dumont Stadium stands by 2020.

“It really, truly, will be the impetus for potentially hundreds of millions of dollars of redevelopment in the core of our city along the river corridor,” Longwell told the Eagle in August. “This is going to help create even more excitement and momentum.”
