Letters on illegal immigrants, boxing, world’s challenges, nuclear arms race

How will Trump purge immigrants?

So I’m wondering how Donald Trump’s plan to purge illegal immigrants is going to work.

Will he have police or soldiers going house to house looking for illegals? Will he have police or soldiers showing up with warrants at Catholic Charities, Inter-Faith Ministries, Guadalupe Clinic and other places that serve the poor, requiring these agencies to hand over their documents so those who are undocumented can be hunted down and deported?

What about those of us who have befriended illegal immigrants? If we don’t turn them in, will we be arrested? Will principals and schoolteachers be punished or arrested if they refuse to cooperate?

Who will be deporting these people? Soldiers? Police? Neighbors? Will trains be at stations throughout the country to deport all 11 million?

I thought we had fought this blind hatred so that it would never happen again.

Savage ‘sport’

There has been a lot of hoopla about boxer Nico Hernandez, a Wichita North High School graduate representing the USA at the Olympics. We’ve got to show the world who’s best at beating up human beings.

I find it incredible that we as a society can sponsor a contest between two human beings, the object of which is to knock unconscious the opponent. And we call it “sport.”

This beating up, drawing blood, pummeling a fellow human being, a brother (or sister – there are woman fighters as well), a child of God in the name of sport is beyond belief for me.

Injuries sustained are permanent. Witness Muhammad Ali. The cumulative effect of his injuries rendered him unable to even talk straight.

In every other sport I can think of, great strides and expense are taken to provide the best of equipment to ensure the safety of the participants. Think of the padding and helmets of football as well as the watchful eyes of referees in other sports, contact or otherwise.

Many fans profess to be Christians. Personally, I doubt that Jesus would enter such arenas.

Can we survive?

We have put men on the moon. We have split atoms. We have changed plants to feed the world. We see black holes, one at the center of our galaxy.

But the future looms large. The problems are myriad. Global warming, meteor impacts, nuclear war, overpopulation – the list of challenges is vast.

Is the human race capable of overcoming all it faces? Can we survive?

I believe the answer is a resounding “yes.” All that is needed is a belief in ourselves.

Lonnie Long, Wichita

End nuclear race

On Aug. 6, 1945, the United States started the nuclear arms race. We need to seriously negotiate ending that race for very commonsense reasons. Nuclear war is suicidal. Fearful humans make mistakes.
