Letters on Kobach’s abuse of plane, fireworks, David Dennis
Investigate Kobach’s abuse of airplane
Secretary of State Kris Kobach’s unethical personal use of state’s Raytheon King Air 350 is unbelievable (“Kobach uses state plane to speak at GOP events,” July 3 Eagle). The state agency reporting on the lowball expense for Kobach’s working-vacation trips must be the same agency that predicts the monthly tax revenues.
According to Sherpa Report, it costs $2,010 to $4,215 per hour to operate a King Air 350. On Kobach’s personal trip to Virginia, and his other overnight trips, who is paying for the pilot’s hotel, meals and ground transportation and for Kobach’s hotel, meals and ground transportation? Ask Kobach. Rest assured, he will have itemized all his expenses for tax deductions.
Attorney General Derek Schmidt needs to do a thorough investigation of Kobach’s abusive and selfish practices.
Gov. Sam Brownback has emasculated education, highway funding, and medical care for the elderly and the disabled, and has crippled our hospitals. This would be a great time to sell the King Air as an “efficiency.”

I hate the Fourth
I love my country, and I celebrate our country’s independence. But I’m really beginning to hate Independence Day.
It seems that all common sense leaves the planet for a week and a half. First there are the idiots shooting off illegal rockets well after civilized people (1:30 a.m.) are in bed trying to get some semblance of sleep before they go back to work.
Then there are all those shooting off illegal fireworks. It was so bad that a few years ago an actual emergency call to 911 couldn’t get through. These same “it’s all about what I want” anarchists feel obligated to let everyone know they have fireworks and know how to use them at 7:45 a.m. Sunday morning.
And the Police Department isn’t doing a thing about it. The county shuffled the fireworks calls to a nonemergency line. How soon does someone listen to that call? Do they just count the number of calls and complaints and call it good?
Man, I hate the Fourth.

Flags and fireworks
On the Fourth of July, I witnessed one of the reasons why our nation is declining so rapidly – attitude.
My U.S. flag was one of only two flying on my block of almost 60 homes. That was sad and deeply disappointing.
Mind you, almost every household was shooting off fireworks. In fact, in my area of south Wichita it goes on for weeks before and after the holiday. It’s aggravating.
I’d wager that none of those blowing up those noisemakers has any idea of the historical significance attached to them. How many even know our national anthem, whose lines recollect that “the bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was still there”?
This nation is in trouble. Attitudes are at an all-time low and no one, seemingly, gives a darn about our freedoms and what price was paid to secure them. I see this every day in public behavior. It is really driven home on the Fourth.
People have hundreds of dollars to blow up but wouldn’t spend $20 for a flag to fly over their home or business. It’s sad. And a disgrace.

Support Dennis
As a retired Sedgwick County sheriff, I encourage voters to join me in supporting retired Col. David Dennis for District 3 Sedgwick County Commission in the Republican primary on Aug. 2.
Dennis will bring a fresh perspective and new leadership to Sedgwick County. He will listen to and work for the citizens of District 3 and not engage in far-out political haranguing that has little to do with the issues confronting Sedgwick County.
Dennis will seek ways to cooperate with other elected officials in the best interests of the county as a whole. He recognizes the Sedgwick County Zoo as an extraordinary community treasure and will not seek to politicize its operation and management.
He will also provide a conservative voice on county finance. He has professional experience in managing large budgets and is dedicated to keeping taxes low.
Sedgwick County citizens need a commissioner like David Dennis. This vote is about the future of our entire community.
