Letters on supporting police, auditing votes, voter ID, Trump’s greed, evolution
Show our support of law enforcement
With the recent national news of law enforcement officers being brutally shot and killed, I would like to see our Wichita community hold a support rally for our police and sheriff officers. We need to let them know how much we appreciate the job they are doing to protect us.
When the officers leave home for their shifts, they know there is a possibility they might not return. Their moms and wives and children have to be worried as well, just so we can feel safe. We can’t begin to imagine all the negative things they encounter.
Let’s show them that we are behind them 100 percent. We should let them know that police and sheriff lives matter, and hold a rally at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Perhaps Wichita can show the rest of the nation that we truly honor our police and sheriff officers.
We can make this happen. I’m sure it would boost their morale when they see the citizens of Wichita are with them.

Why not audit voting?
I can’t believe Secretary of State Kris Kobach, the king of voter fraud, doesn’t want a voting audit done on Kansas. How can you make all these laws against voter fraud, and when you have a chance to prove your point, you won’t help? Maybe he’s scared of what an audit would find out. The law needs to be changed.

Rule our elections?
Regarding “Judge: Kobach exceeded authority” (Aug. 27 Eagle): Our forefathers crossed continents to earn the right to vote. Since when do federal judges and the American Civil Liberties Union get to rule Kansas state elections?
Some think it’s too much of a hurdle for Kansans to produce a photo ID to vote. Something stinks about all this.

Trump’s greed
I find it incredibly disturbing that Donald Trump is doing so well in the polls as a GOP presidential candidate. This paragon of unfettered greed makes Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush seem benign by comparison.
If most of us were honest, we would like to have unlimited wealth. However, there comes a responsibility along with this fortune, and I personally would not flaunt it the way Trump does. We must care for our families and contribute to charities that are trustworthy, not just indulge ourselves in the narcissistic manner that Trump does.

Right, wrong?
Because the writer of “No creation required” (Aug. 29 Letters to the Editor) seemed to endorse the book “The Blind Watchmaker,” by Richard Dawkins (an outspoken atheist), it seems apparent on which side of the creation/evolution debate he is. And that is his prerogative. I, for one, as a Christian, will certainly not try to take that freedom away from him.
Neither am I going to get into a debate about the subject, as that has been argued for decades with both sides thinking they are right.
What did intrigue me about the writer’s argument was his statement that “the Bible is no more reality than Greek mythology.” Understandably, we discount stories about Zeus, Hades, Apollo, Aphrodite, etc., as “non-realities.” Based upon that principle, perhaps it would be OK with the writer if I stole any of his personal property, told blatant lies about him, refused to help him in his time of need, etc., because our beliefs regarding such issues essentially originated from the teachings of the Bible, which has no “reality” to it. Why abide by those principles if they are not real enough to live by?
This may sound a little extreme, but then where did we, as humans, get our sense of right and wrong?

Different origins
Regarding the ongoing controversy of evolution and creationism: We only have to look at the wonders of nature’s reproductive ways.
Some animals lay eggs in the sand, and then go away while the heat of the sun hatches the eggs. Other animals have to sit on their eggs to ensure a minimum temperature. Other animals give birth directly from their bodies. The male sea horse carries the young. The amoeba merely splits into two for reproduction.
I believe it is entirely possible that some people evolved over time from other animal life. I believe some were created immediately human by an almighty being.
I think every person has a deep and correct intuition as to the mode by which they were created. I’m not saying that I believe one mode is superior to the other. So let us all be at peace and accept each other no matter the individual’s origin, as none of us has the power to change the system anyway.
