Sedgwick County calls for more election workers
The Sedgwick County Election Office is recruiting workers to help handle what it expects to be an “all-time-high” voter turnout this year.
The office needs workers to help at the polls on Aug. 2, the primary election, and on Nov. 8 for the general election.
Tabitha Lehman, county election commissioner, said the county has “significantly more” registered voters compared to 2008. During the last election, the office had 650 workers helping at the polls. This year, Lehman said, she is looking to increase that number.
“We’re shooting for around 1,000 people,” she said.
Workers will be at the polls from 4:45 a.m. to 9 p.m. and will help by setting up the booths, assisting voters and making sure everything is done in compliance with election law. Workers will be paid $120 for Election Day and $22.50 for a mandatory training day.
The job is open to any registered Sedgwick County voter or individuals at least 16 years old who would otherwise be able to vote.
Lehman said it’s a chance to get some exposure to the election process
“It’s an opportunity to be involved in your community, to get to know your neighbors and to make sure the process is done correctly,” Lehman said.
