Newman University has received a $1 million grant from the Dwane L. and Velma Lunt Wallace Charitable Foundation to support the university’s science and health science programs, the school said Thursday in a news release.

Newman President Noreen Carrocci said the gift will help students in the science, nursing and allied health fields. She said the gift also will “enhance the quality of care for the residents throughout the Wichita region as our highly trained graduates go on to work in local hospitals, clinics and health care facilities,” she said in the release.

Dwane Wallace led the Cessna Aircraft Co. from 1934 through 1975 and is considered an industry pioneer. The Wallaces established their foundation in 1989 to support programs and organizations that enhance the quality of life in Wichita.

Newman, located near Kellogg and Meridian, is a Catholic University founded in 1933.
