Wichita kids encouraged to visit summer meal sites Wednesday for free lunch
Children are encouraged to visit one of 44 summer meal sites around Wichita for a free lunch on Wednesday as part of Summer Meals Day.
The event, organized by groups who advocate on behalf of hungry children, is intended to raise awareness of the summer meals program and reduce the stigma around it. People are encouraged to share their experiences on social media Wednesday using the hashtag #LunchAcrossKS.
Forty-four school cafeterias and other sites around Wichita offer free breakfasts, lunches or afternoon snacks as part of Kid Power Cafe, the annual summer food service program. The program is run by the Wichita school district and is paid for by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The program is open to all children younger than 18. No reservations are required, and there are no qualifying guidelines or paperwork to fill out.
