Two injured in drive-by shooting in southeast Wichita
A 23-year-old man was in critical condition following a drive-by shooting in southeast Wichita on Saturday night, Wichita police Sgt. Brian Hightower said.
At around 9:30 p.m., officers responded to a disturbance in the 2800 block of East Glen Oaks. When they arrived, they found a 23-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman with gunshot wounds in a parked vehicle, Hightower said.
He said a vehicle had pulled up to the parked car shortly before 9:30 p.m., and multiple shots were fired from that vehicle at the parked one, “striking the two victims.”
Both were initially assessed as in critical condition and taken to a hospital, but a Sedgwick County dispatcher later said the 19-year-old woman was listed in fair condition by 10:15 p.m.
As of 11:30 p.m., police were still interviewing witnesses and had no suspects in custody.
Hightower said the rain, which had been falling at a steady pace all day, was hampering the police investigation at the scene.
“Weather like this doesn’t help,” he said. “You always risk losing evidence when you have inclement weather, but it’s just something you have to overcome.”
Police have found shell casings on the scene, but Hightower said he did not know what type of firearm was used.
Neighbors in the area reported hearing eight or nine gunshots.
Police are expected to release more information about the shooting at briefing Sunday.
