Man attacked while sorting out Old Town traffic accident

A 57-year-old man who was involved in a car collision in Old Town was attacked by a man who had nothing to do with the incident, police say.

The attack happened around 12:30 a.m. Saturday at Douglas and Rock Island after the 57-year-old man was involved in a minor collision with a 39-year-old female driver.

“They were in the midst of dealing with the collision and the police were then called because a bystander intervened in that and attacked one of the drivers,” said Sgt. Roger Runft.

Another bystander witnessed the attacker punch the 57-year-old man in the face several times, causing lacerations and facial fractures. The unknown man then ran away from the scene.

The victim was transported to the hospital.

The female driver had minor injuries from the collision, but refused medical treatment, Runft said.
