Prosecutors on Friday charged the man arrested in connection with a fatal shooting on March 3 with second-degree murder.

Joshua Thomas, 27, appeared in a Sedgwick County courtroom for his first appearance Friday afternoon via a video link from the county jail, where he’s being held in lieu of a $250,000 bond. He’s accused of killing 35-year-old Brandon Walters at Walters’ home in the 1700 block of South Roanoke. Walters was shot inside but staggered outdoors before collapsing and dying in the front yard. A roommate called 911.

Police captured Thomas on Thursday morning in the backyard of a house in the 600 block of South Brookside following an hours-long standoff with officers. Authorities went to the address to talk to a women linked to Walters and spotted him leaving a detached garage.

Thomas is due back in court May 5 for a preliminary hearing, although the date is likely to be postponed. He will be represented by a court-appointed defense attorney.

Police have said an argument prompted Walters’ shooting.
