Police: Intruder, resident exchange gunfire in house

Police are looking for two men who broke into a house early Monday morning, one of whom exchanged gunfire with the resident before they fled.

A 52-year-old man reported that two men broke into his house after entering the garage in the 8200 block of East Zimmerly at about 2:45 a.m. Monday, Lt. James Espinoza said. That’s northeast of Harry and Rock Road in southeast Wichita.

The homeowner heard gunshots and saw someone pointing a gun toward him, Espinoza said.

“He fired several gunshots toward the suspects” in the house, Espinoza said.

Both suspects fled the house through the garage and left in an unknown direction, he said. Officers found a gun inside the house that the victim thinks belonged to one of the suspects.

“No one was hit” by gunfire “that we know of,” Espinoza said. “It’s believed this male had been talking about some winnings he had at a casino” and that may have motivated the suspects to attempt to rob him.
