Man to be sentenced next month for 2013 gang killing
A Wichita man tried for a 2013 gang killing that went unsolved for more than a year will be sentenced in the case April 14.
Marquel Dean, 29, was found guilty by a Sedgwick County jury last week of first-degree premeditated murder, four counts of aggravated battery and criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was tried in the July 14, 2013, shooting death of James Gary.
Gary, 27, was killed during an after-hours warehouse party in the 800 block of East 11th Street. Four other people were hurt. The shooting was the result of a long-running gang feud, authorities and prosecutors have said.
Dean and Shane Landrum, 33, were arrested and charged 18 months after the shooting.
Dean’s attorney in a court document said there was insufficient evidence presented at trial that Dean was the shooter and that the shooting was planned. He will argue for a new trial when Dean is sentenced, according to court records.
Landrum is scheduled for a jury trial on murder and other charges April 25.
