Police: Teens arrested after pointing BB guns that looked like rifles
Wichita police arrested four teens Sunday afternoon after the teens reportedly pointed BB guns at residents.
According to police, two 14-year-old and two 15-year-old boys were in a Chrysler Town and Country minivan in the 2900 block of East Glen Oak, pointing BB guns that resembled rifles at people in the neighborhood.
Lt. James Espinoza said that at about 2 p.m. the Police Department received several calls from residents who thought the guns were rifles.
He said police officers saturated the area.
“That’s a call that ups the scale a little bit,” Espinoza said. “You’re going to be very much guarded when you’re hearing rifles.”
When police found the teens, he said, officers seized several BB guns, and the boys were arrested on charges of aggravated assault.
Espinoza said the outcome could have been worse.
“Someone who was armed could have shot first and injured these teenagers,” he said. “Not a very smart thing to do. We’re going to obviously take it seriously.”
