Woman dies in shooting in southwest Wichita (+video)

A woman has died after a reported shooting near 42nd and Elizabeth in southwest Wichita, police said.

Wichita police Lt. Dennis Wilson said officers responded to a report of a shooting at a home in the 1300 block of West 42nd Street South shortly before 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

When officers arrived, they found a woman in her late 20s in a car in critical condition, Wilson said. The suspect in the case called 911 to report the shooting, Wilson said.

The woman was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, where she was later pronounced dead, according to a Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher.

A male suspect, also in his late 20s, was taken into custody Wednesday night, Wilson said.

He said police think the two knew each other but are unsure of their exact relationship.

They are also unsure whether the shooting happened at the home or at another location, Wilson said.

As of Wednesday night, police had no witnesses, Wilson said, and people who live in the area did not report hearing gunshots.

A Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher reported earlier in the evening that police had taken two people into custody and could not confirm whether the second person was still in custody as of 9 p.m.

Police are still investigating and are expected to release more information at a 10 a.m. media briefing on Thursday.

Police are investigating the case as a homicide, the fifth in Wichita in two weeks.
