Woman charged with murder in Wichita State student’s death (+video)
One of two people suspected in the Aug. 8 shooting death of a Wichita State University student was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder and aggravated robbery. Eboni Fingal was originally arrested in August but was released from jail last month pending a charging decision from the Sedgwick County district attorney.
Fingal, 20, was rearrested Tuesday and booked at 4:07 p.m. on suspicion of the two crimes, according to jail booking records and the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. She closed her eyes as the judge announced her charges in Sedgwick County District Court on Wednesday afternoon.
She is accused in the death of 23-year-old Rayan Ibrahim Baba, a Saudi undergraduate student who was found lying in the parking lot of one of the university’s dormitories, Fairmount Towers, around 6:30 a.m. Aug. 8, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Baba, who lived in the dorm, died about 30 minutes later at a Wichita hospital.
Authorities have said that Baba knew Fingal and 23-year-old Isaiah Copridge, another suspect in the slaying, and had made arrangements to meet them at Fairmount Towers the day he was shot.
Fingal and Copridge originally were arrested Aug. 9.
Fingal was released from jail in September pending a charging decision from the district attorney’s office. Copridge, who has not been charged in Baba’s death, is currently serving a prison sanction for violating his parole in child abuse case. The sanction came after his arrest in connection with homicide.
Copridge could be released from prison as early as Nov. 18, according to the Kansas Department Corrections website.
Baba was a Saudi undergraduate student majoring in electrical engineering. WSU officials have said he had been enrolled in classes during the spring semester and was preparing to move out of the dormitory when he was shot. Fairmount Towers is at 2221 N. Hillside.
