El Dorado High School locked down after threats

El Dorado High School was locked down Monday afternoon after a threat on social media, according to district officials.

A student reported the threat to school officials, and the lockdown happened shortly before 1:30 p.m., according to Kimberly Webb, director of the school district’s information services. Local law enforcement officers screened all rooms in the high school following the threat.

Students were released on schedule at 3 p.m.

“Today, for the second time in ten days, our high school students and staff managed allegations of threats posted on social media,” Sue Givens, El Dorado school superintendent, said in a news release issued Monday evening. “For the second time in ten days, the important work of education and extracurricular activities was disrupted to ensure the safety of students and staff.”

The Augusta at El Dorado football game on Sept. 11 was postponed after a threat on social media. The game was played two days later.

The news release Monday said the district will seek discipline, prosecution or both when it is determined who sent the threat.

“It is important to note that due to the nature of the threats, it cannot be assumed that the individual(s) making the threats are students,” the news release said. “Due to perceived anonymity when behind a computer screen or on a smartphone, we must assume the threats could come from a variety of sources.”

The district will continue to follow safety protocols and keep parents and staff members updated, the news release said.
