Wichita man arrested in connection with 1-year-old daughter’s death
A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of homicide and child abuse in the death of his 1-year-old daughter Wednesday night, police said.
The man called 911 at about 7:20 p.m. Wednesday to report that his daughter was not breathing, Wichita police Lt. Todd Ojile said. Emergency responders who arrived at the house in the 2100 block of South Hydraulic found the child was “not responsive,” Ojile said.
Efforts to revive her were futile, and she was pronounced dead at 8 p.m., Ojile said.
An investigation revealed the child was being watched by her biological father while the mother was at work, Ojile said.
“The child had numerous bruises and scratches and trauma to the face,” he said, and they did not fit evidence located at the house.
The girl’s 25-year-old mother said her daughter did not have any bruising or trauma when she left for work at about 2 p.m. Wednesday. Following an interrogation, the father, identified in records as Michael C. Williams, was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail shortly after 3:15 a.m. Thursday.
The child is Wichita’s 19th homicide of the year, Ojile said. An autopsy is planned to confirm how the girl died.
