Police officials on Monday said the man killed in a shootout with officers early Sunday was Jeffrey D. Holden Jr.

Holden, 18, opened fire on an officer who confronted him next to Mount Carmel Village apartments in the 3000 block of West Douglas shortly after 6:30 a.m. as the officer was responding to multiple reports of a man on foot shooting at houses and passers-by.

In an account of the shooting provided late Sunday afternoon, police said the officer pulled into the apartment complex as an evasive maneuver and was pinned down by continuous gunfire from the shooter.

The officer requested assistance, and numerous other officers arrived. Holden began firing on the other officers as well. He fired simultaneously with two guns – a .22 revolver and a .380 handgun – and reloaded several times.

Holden was shot and was pronounced dead in the front yard of a house in the 3100 block of West Douglas at 7:01 a.m. He was associated with a local gang, police said, and was documented as a missing person in the Kansas City area. He also was the subject of outstanding warrants from Cowley County.

Court records in Cowley County indicate Holden was wanted on a probation violation and escaping from custody. He had escaped from Arkansas City police while in their custody, court records show.

The three Wichita police officers who fired shots at Holden have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy, officials said.

An autopsy was conducted on Holden on Monday morning, Lt. James Espinoza said.

No other injuries were reported in connection with the shooting, officials have said.
