A 23-year-old man died after being shot several times Tuesday morning in the Oaklawn housing development, authorities said.

The shooting was reported at 6:18 a.m. in the 4600 block of South Brookhaven, according to a Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher. That’s northwest of K-15 and 47th Street South.

The man was not breathing at the scene of the shooting, and despite an emergency medical services crew’s attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at Wesley Medical Center, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Lt. Lin Dehning said.

Law enforcement officers are looking for three suspects who left in a dark-colored SUV. Detectives were interviewing neighbors, but Dehning said he didn’t expect any additional information to be released until Wednesday.

Khamsy Syakhasone, 75, said he received a call from one of his daughters Tuesday morning saying that his grandson Welly Syakhasone had been shot and killed. A friend posted on a Facebook page Tuesday morning: “Rest in peace Welly.”

The grandfather, who said the family is Laotian, was driving by the shooting site at around 9 a.m. in a van and said he was trying to find the man’s parents. A Laotian neighbor said he thought the victim’s father owned a liquor store.

Neighbors on the street right behind the house where the shooting took place said it was a quiet neighborhood.

“The police pass by once in awhile,” Felimon Garcia said. “Maybe every two days.”

Joel Vaquera, who lives two houses down from where the shooting occurred, said he came home tired and didn’t hear anything. He runs around the neighborhood to get in shape for pickup soccer games and said he’d never noticed anything unusual about the house.

Welly Syakhasone’s LinkedIn profile said he was a general laborer for a year and a half, cutting metal at Complexx Machining, and was enrolled at Wichita Area Technical College.

Bodi Bian, the owner of Complexx Machining, said Syakhasone worked there around four years ago.
