Crime victims awarded nearly $251,000
Victims of violent crime were awarded $250,920.10 by the Kansas Crime Victims Compensation Board at its July meeting.
Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said 254 victims — including 134 in new cases and 120 in previously submitted cases — will receive the payouts, which help pay for unexpected expenses such as medical treatment and mental health counseling, lost wages and funeral expenses for those impacted by violent crimes in Kansas.
The state’s three-member board, established in 1978, met and announced the awards at its monthly meeting on Thursday. Awards are limited to $25,000 and are funded through assessed court costs and fines, inmate wages, parole fees and restitution paid.
