Bond revoked for former Wichita school safety supervisor in child sex case
A former Wichita police sergeant and Wichita public school employee charged with molesting boys in Sedgwick County has been found guilty of similar offenses in a Colorado court.
Alex Robinson will be sentenced Oct. 13 in El Paso County District Court in Colorado Springs, Colo., on two felony convictions of sexual assault of a child, age 15 to 18, by a person in a position of trust, Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said by e-mail. He was convicted Thursday.
Monday, a Sedgwick County judge issued a warrant for Robinson’s arrest and revoked his bond when he didn’t show up for a scheduled court appearance on eight local child sexual assault charges, including aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated indecent liberties with a child and indecent liberties with a child, according to court records. He was due for a jury trial Monday in Wichita.
Bennett said the Colorado court reinstated a $10,000 bond for Robinson after he was found guilty Thursday and that’s why he missed the local court date. He was booked into El Paso County, Colo., Jail on July 2, a deputy with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said.
If Robinson posts bond in Colorado, “he will be sent back to Wichita,” Bennett said.
Robinson’s attorney could not be reached for comment immediately Monday evening.
No new trial date was listed for Robinson in Sedgwick County District Court records on Monday.
He has pleaded not guilty to the local charges.
Robinson, once a volunteer for youth-mentoring programs Real Men, Real Heroes and Boys & Girls Club, came under police scrutiny in early 2013. A 24-year-old man went to Wichita authorities, claiming he had been molested and sodomized when he was a child by Robinson, who was then a police officer. The man testified at a hearing in April that he met Robinson through the Boys & Girls Club when he was 11 or 12 and was assaulted at Robinson’s southeast Wichita apartment and at the Atwater recreation center, near 19th and Grove.
A 13-year-old boy testified in April that he knew Robinson through Real Men, Real Heroes and was inappropriately touched by Robinson during a church camp outing. A third witness, a 17-year-old boy, said Robinson groped him after the two were introduced by a relative; Robinson, the boy testified, wore security attire or a suit when he visited.
At the time of his arrest in January 2013, Robinson was working as school safety services supervisor for the Wichita public school district. He remained on the payroll, on paid administrative leave, for more than a year before his employment ended last year.
Robinson also served on the board of directors for Real Men, Real Heroes. He was asked to resign in the wake of the sex assault investigation.
The alleged offenses in the Sedgwick County case stretch over 12 years, starting in 2000; the victims ranged in age from 11 to 14.
The Colorado case surfaced after news of the Wichita investigation prompted a man to come forward claiming he was molested when Robinson visited his home in 1996 or 1997.
