Wichita police: Woman catches boyfriend cheating, shoots him in groin

A woman walked in on her boyfriend having sex with another woman early Tuesday morning and vowed to go home and get a gun, police said.

She made good on her promise, police say, returning to the house where she found her boyfriend and shooting him once in the groin as he sat in a lawn chair in the front yard of a south Wichita house at about 2:15 a.m. Tuesday.

The woman, 44, was found and arrested a few minutes later at Lincoln and McLean, Lt. James Espinoza said. The 44-year-old shooting victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He was in serious condition late Tuesday morning, Espinoza said.

The suspect went looking for her boyfriend at a house he was remodeling in the 1100 block of South Emporia, Espinoza said. She found him there with another woman, who left after the girlfriend departed.

The victim was talking to two other men when she returned an hour or so later, Espinoza said. She approached the victim and pulled the trigger, but the handgun malfunctioned.

She then cleared the gun mechanism and fired again, Espinoza said.

“She walked right up on him,” Espinoza said. “I think there was some disbelief that that was going to happen.”

The woman was booked on suspicion of aggravated battery and not attempted murder, Espinoza said, because she fired one shot and was aiming specifically at the groin.

The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office will determine what, if any, charges, will be filed in the case.
