Former Heights High music teacher charged with unlawful sex with student

A Wichita Heights High School music teacher who resigned in March has been charged with unlawful sexual relations with a student, records show.

Alan J. Martens, 25, had his first appearance in Sedgwick County District Court on Thursday and faces a May 21 preliminary hearing, District Attorney spokeswoman Georgia Cole said Friday.

Neither Martens nor his attorney could be reached for comment Friday.

The alleged victim is a female 16 or older, according to Thursday’s jail booking report.

The felony charge – unlawful sexual relations – was filed April 23. The criminal complaint alleges that around March 4, Martens engaged in “sexual intercourse, lewd fondling or touching, or sodomy” with a student and that he was a teacher or “person in authority” at the school where the victim was enrolled.

Martens was in his first year of teaching and resigned in March, said Wichita school district spokeswoman Susan Arensman.

A March 13 police report on the case says that principal Bruce Deterding reported four students “witnessing an incident involving another student.” The incident occurred at Heights High, 5301 N. Hillside, the report says.
