Man, 18, shot in groin while sitting in parked car
An 18-year-old man was arrested and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail after allegedly shooting another man in the groin by accident Wednesday afternoon near 45th Street North and Ridge Road.
Lt. Lin Dehning, spokesman for the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, said Zackary J. Cary was sitting in a car parked outside a home in the 6900 block of West Childs, talking with another 18-year-old, when a handgun he allegedly was handling discharged around 4:30 p.m. The bullet hit the man in the crotch, causing serious but nonlife-threatening injuries, Dehning said.
The person who owns the car and lives in the home the car was parked outside of drove the wounded man to Wesley West ER and Diagnostic Center, near 13th and Tyler, for help. From there, an ambulance took him to Wesley Medical Center, where he was treated and released, Dehning said.
Authorities later tracked Cary down at a house a few blocks away from where the shooting occurred and arrested him there, according to booking records. He was jailed on suspicion of committing aggravated battery and being a felon in possession of a weapon in connection with Wednesday’s events, as well as on a warrant in a 2015 juvenile court case, Dehning said.
Dehning said he didn’t know what the men were talking about leading up to the shooting, but they weren’t fighting. Cary, he said, was jailed because he allegedly was handling the gun recklessly when it went off.
Detectives plan to present the case to prosecutors for possible criminal charges before the end of the week, Dehning said. Cary remained in the Sedgwick County Jail on Thursday in lieu of $50,000 bond.
