A dispute between two men in separate cars was carried out during a short chase Monday afternoon, ending with one of the men being shot and taken to the hospital in critical condition, Wichita police said.

The two men, who knew each other, “had a beef, and they decided to settle it on the streets,” Sgt. John Ryan said.

Police were still looking early Monday evening for a man who fired the shots from a late-model silver SUV.

The Labor Day argument started at 13th and Oliver. The two men continued to argue as the vehicles went west and then through the neighborhood, Ryan said.

Shortly before 3 p.m., as the two vehicles pulled up near 12th and Hillside, the man in the SUV fired multiple shots toward a Ford Mustang. It wasn’t clear whether the man also fired shots at the Mustang earlier during the dispute.

Several of those shots hit the driver, Ryan said. The SUV, with three to four men inside, went south on Hillside.

A passenger in the Mustang wasn’t injured and called police, Ryan said.

The Mustang remained at the scene on 12th at the Hillside stop sign. Blood had soaked the driver’s seat. A rear window had a bullet hole, and a left rear tire had been shot flat.

The passenger in the Mustang told police there was an ongoing feud between the injured man and the shooter in the SUV, Ryan said.

All of the men involved in the incident were in their mid-20s to 30s, Ryan said.
